Drag a box over anything private and save a copy where it is permanently removed — not a black rectangle with the text still underneath.

gone, not hidden
A black box is not a redaction
The classic mistake is to draw a black rectangle over a name in a PDF and send it. It looks redacted, but the text is still in the file: anyone can select it, copy it, or search for it, and it has leaked court filings and government reports more than once. Real redaction has to remove the content itself, not paint over it.
Here every page you mark is turned into an image, the areas you boxed are painted solid black in that image, and the document is rebuilt from scratch — so the hidden words are not lurking anywhere in the new file, not even in parts a PDF reader does not show. Pages without a box are copied unchanged and keep their selectable text. The trade-off is that a redacted page is now a picture: its remaining text can be read but not selected or searched.
three steps
How to redact a PDF
01
Open the PDF
Drop the file in. Pages load as you scroll, so even a long document opens quickly. It is read in your browser and never uploaded.
02
Box everything private
Drag across names, addresses, signatures, account numbers or whole sections. Go through every page — a name on page one is often repeated on page seven. Remove a box with its × button.
03
Download the redacted copy
Marked pages are flattened into images with the boxes burned in, the rest are copied as they were, and a new PDF is saved. Your original file is not touched.
quick answers
Redact PDF FAQ
Is the text under the box really gone?
Yes. A page with a box is rendered into an image, the box is painted onto that image, and a brand-new PDF is built from it. The original words are not stored anywhere in the result — they cannot be selected, copied, searched or dug out of the file.
Why can I no longer select text on a redacted page?
Because the page is now a picture. That is what makes the redaction trustworthy. Pages you did not mark keep their text layer. If you want no text left anywhere, tick the option to turn every page into an image.
Does it remove the title, author and bookmarks?
The new file is built without the original document’s title, author or bookmarks, so none of those details come along. Only the pages are carried over — and pages you did not mark keep everything on them, such as links or filled-in form boxes.
Can it find every mention of a name for me?
Not yet — you mark each area yourself. Check every page, including headers, footers and signature blocks, because the same name or number often appears more than once.
Does it work on scanned documents?
Yes. A scan is already a picture of a page, so drawing a box over part of it and saving works exactly the same way, and the covered part is gone from the result.
Why is the redacted file bigger?
A page of text takes a few kilobytes, but the same page as an image takes a few hundred. Only the pages you marked are converted, so a long document with one redacted page grows only a little.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The PDF is opened, redacted and rebuilt entirely inside your browser, and the result goes straight to your downloads. Sending a sensitive file to a server to have its secrets removed would defeat the purpose.
Can I redact a password-protected PDF?
No. Encrypted files cannot be opened here. Remove the password in the application that created the file, then redact the unlocked copy.
