1584 × 396
A LinkedIn profile banner is 1584 × 396, a 4:1 ratio — flatter than a cinema screen and flatter than any photograph you are likely to own. Almost nothing survives that crop unaltered: a portrait loses everything but a band across the eyes, a building loses its roof and its base. Images that work here are either wide by nature, like a horizon or a desk shot from above, or are built for the shape rather than cropped into it.
Your profile photo then sits over the lower-left of the banner on desktop, and on mobile the strip is cropped in from both sides. The practical consequence is the same as on every other profile header: keep the meaningful content centred and slightly right, treat the lower-left as background, and check that any text still reads when the strip is only a couple of hundred pixels tall on screen.
three steps
PNG, JPG or WebP. It is decoded in the page — nothing is uploaded, so nothing waits on a connection.
The crop box is already locked to the 4:1 shape. Drag it over the part that matters and resize it from any corner; the pixel size is shown as you go.
The export is exactly 1584 × 396. JPEG for photographs, PNG when the banner is flat colour with text.
quick answers
1584 × 396 pixels for a personal profile, a 4:1 ratio, which is what this page crops and exports to.
Over the lower-left on the desktop layout. Leave that corner as background — a logo or a line of text placed there will be partly hidden.
Usually because the source was narrower than 1584 pixels and got enlarged. Start from something at least that wide; a 4:1 crop discards so much height that width is the only dimension you have to spare.
