Each image becomes one frame, in the order you arrange them. The canvas takes the largest width and height in the set, and smaller frames are centred with transparent padding unless you switch to fill mode — so a mixed-size batch produces a stable animation rather than one that jumps around.
GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, and every frame is quantised separately. On flat graphics and screenshots that is invisible. On photographs and gradients it shows as banding, and as colours that shift slightly from one frame to the next, because each frame chose its own palette.

Delay is per frame in milliseconds; loop count 0 repeats forever. Note that GIF stores delays in hundredths of a second, so a value that is not a multiple of 10 ms is rounded — 33 ms and 30 ms play the same.
The preview plays the real encoded GIF, not a slideshow of the source images, so what you see is what the file does. Save it when the timing looks right.

GIF allows 256 colours per frame and the encoder picks them per frame. A photo or a gradient has far more than that, so it gets quantised, and neighbouring frames can land on slightly different palettes. Use flat-coloured source images, or export video instead if the content is photographic.
The largest width and the largest height across all your frames, so nothing is cropped in fit mode. Frames smaller than that are centred and padded; in fill mode they are scaled to cover instead.

GIF compresses each frame independently with a scheme from 1987 and has no motion prediction. Fewer frames, fewer colours and smaller dimensions are the only levers. A short MP4 or WebP animation is typically a fraction of the size.
GIF supports one fully transparent colour — no partial alpha. A soft, anti-aliased edge from a PNG becomes a hard one, and padding around smaller frames is transparent in fit mode.
