Four controls in one pass — brightness, warm and cool tone, saturation, highlights — and they are applied in that order, which matters more than it sounds. Brightness multiplies first, so everything after it works on the already-scaled values. Saturation is computed against the grey point of the tone-shifted pixel, not the original one.
The practical rule that falls out of it: fix exposure, then the colour cast, then saturation, then rescue the highlights. Working backwards means every earlier slider has to be redone, because each step changed the numbers the next one reads.

Brightness multiplies all three channels by the same factor. Tone adds to red and subtracts from blue for a white-balance style fix. Saturation pushes each pixel away from its own grey point without moving hue. Highlights lifts or lowers only the bright half of the range.
The result is always computed in the same fixed order, so the output does not depend on which slider you touched last. What changes is how easy it is to judge — set exposure before colour, and colour before saturation, or you will keep chasing your own corrections.
Reset sliders returns everything to neutral: 100% brightness, 100% saturation, no tone shift. Individual sliders can be dragged back to their own default at any time — nothing is baked in until you export.
Brightness moves every pixel and blows the sky out while it is still rescuing the faces. Highlights only touches what is already bright, so the two together handle a backlit photo that neither can fix alone.
When you only need one correction and do not want the others in the way. They run exactly the same code with the other controls hidden, so the result is identical.
