real text, not a stamp
Each number is drawn as text with one of the standard PDF fonts, which means it stays selectable and searchable, prints sharp at any zoom and adds a few dozen bytes per page rather than an image. The rest of the document is untouched: the text layer, the links and the bookmarks all survive, because numbering only appends to each page rather than rebuilding it.
The two settings that matter most are the ones every report needs. Leave the first page unnumbered when there is a cover, and set the first number when the document is a chapter that starts at 47. The counter in the style with a total counts the pages that actually get a number, so a ten-page file with a skipped cover ends at nine of nine rather than claiming a tenth page that carries no number.
three steps
It opens in your browser with the same engine that draws our PDF previews. Nothing is uploaded, so a contract or a manuscript stays on your machine.
Plain digits, a count with a total, dashes or brackets; then one of nine positions plus the size and the margin. The preview shows the first page that will actually be numbered.
Skip the cover if there is one and set the first number if the document continues from somewhere else. Then download; the original file is never modified.
quick answers
Real text, drawn with a standard PDF font. You can select and search them in any reader, and they stay crisp however far you zoom in — unlike a watermark, which has to be an image to allow arbitrary scripts.
Not here. The standard PDF fonts only cover Latin characters, so free text would break the moment someone typed Chinese or Thai. Keeping to digits means the tool behaves the same in all twelve languages this site runs in.
Turn on leaving the first page unnumbered. Counting then starts on page two, which gets your first number — so a cover plus nine numbered pages reads one to nine.
Yes. Set the first number to anything, which is what you want when a document is one chapter of something longer and its pages should continue from 47 rather than restart.
Each page is measured on its own, rotation included, so a page saved sideways gets its number in the corner you chose as the reader sees it — the right way up, not lying on its side.
It might, if your layout runs to the edge. Raise the margin to push it outward, or move it to a different corner; the preview shows exactly where it will sit before you download anything.
Barely. A number is a few dozen bytes of text per page, and the font is embedded once for the whole document.
No. Encrypted files cannot be opened here. Remove the password in the application that made the file or in your PDF reader, then run the unlocked copy through this tool.
No. The file is read, numbered and rebuilt inside your browser, and the result goes straight to your downloads. There is no server in this tool to send a document to.
Yes — free with no watermark.
