1080 × 1080
A square post is 1080 × 1080. The size matters less than the shape, because the profile grid shows every post as a square thumbnail regardless of what you uploaded — a portrait post is cropped to its centre square there, whatever you framed. Cropping to 1:1 yourself means the grid and the feed show the same picture, which is the whole point of a square in the first place.
1080 pixels is also the width Instagram keeps. Upload something wider and it is downscaled, and the downscaling is not gentle with fine detail or small text. Upload something narrower and it is enlarged and looks soft. Landing exactly on 1080 on the long edge, which is what the export here does, is the one setting that removes a whole class of "why does it look worse in the app" problems.
three steps
PNG, JPG or WebP. It is decoded in the page — nothing is uploaded, so nothing waits on a connection.
The crop box is already locked to the 1:1 shape. Drag it over the part that matters and resize it from any corner; the pixel size is shown as you go.
The export is exactly 1080 × 1080. JPEG for photos; PNG if the artwork is flat colour or contains crisp text.
quick answers
1080 × 1080 for a square, which is what this page exports. Portrait posts are 1080 × 1350 and stories are 1080 × 1920 — each has its own page here.
Instagram resizes uploads to 1080 pixels wide. Anything larger is downscaled and anything smaller is enlarged; both soften detail. Exporting at exactly 1080 skips the step.
For the grid, yes — every post appears there as a square thumbnail. Portrait posts take more room in the feed, so many accounts shoot portrait and accept the grid crop. A square is the option where both views match.
No. The crop and the resize happen in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
