the newest format, the oldest problem

Why convert AVIF to PNG?

AVIF is the most efficient still-image format in wide use: at the same visual quality it lands well under JPEG and usually under WebP too. Browsers have supported it for years, so sites serve it happily. The trouble starts the moment a file leaves the browser. Older photo editors, print workflows, document templates and a great many upload forms simply do not recognise the format, and an AVIF you downloaded is an AVIF you cannot place.

PNG is the opposite trade. It is larger — often much larger, because AVIF compresses so well — but it is lossless and there is essentially nothing that cannot open it. Converting here decodes the AVIF with your browser's own decoder and re-encodes the pixels as PNG, keeping the alpha channel if there is one.

what you get

AVIF to PNG output

PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider to get wrong. Dimensions are kept exactly, and transparency survives the trip. If you would rather have a smaller file than a universal one, switch the output to JPG or WebP — both are available from the same picker.

Opens everywhere

Office documents, email clients, older editors and upload forms all accept PNG without argument.

Transparency kept

An AVIF with an alpha channel becomes a PNG with an alpha channel — no white box behind your logo.

Expect a bigger file

AVIF is far more efficient than PNG, so the result is often several times the size. That is the price of universal support, not a fault in the conversion.

three steps

How to convert AVIF to PNG

01

Upload the AVIF

Drop an .avif file. Decoding uses the AVIF support already built into your browser, which is why nothing has to be downloaded or installed.

02

Pick the output

PNG is selected for you. Switch to JPG or WebP if a smaller file matters more than opening in absolutely everything.

03

Download

The converted image is written in your browser and saved straight to your device.

AVIF to PNG FAQ

How do I convert AVIF to PNG?

Upload the AVIF, leave the output on PNG and press download. Nothing is sent anywhere — the file is decoded and re-encoded on your own machine, which also means it works with the network disconnected.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?

Because AVIF is a modern lossy format built for compression and PNG is a lossless one from 1996. A photo that fits in 200 KB of AVIF can easily need a couple of megabytes as PNG, and no converter can avoid that. You are trading file size for the ability to open the image anywhere. If size matters more, choose JPG or WebP in the output picker instead.

It says my browser cannot open AVIF.

Then the file is fine and the browser is the problem — decoding relies on support built into the browser itself. Chrome, Edge and recent Firefox all handle AVIF; older Safari versions and long-outdated builds do not. Opening this page in a current browser is the whole fix.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes, when converting to PNG or WebP, both of which have an alpha channel. Converting to JPG is the exception: JPG has no transparency at all, so transparent areas are flattened onto a white background.

Can I convert PNG back to AVIF here?

No, and that is a browser limitation rather than a choice. Browsers can decode AVIF but cannot encode it — the canvas export simply has no AVIF option, so a converter claiming to output AVIF in the browser would be handing you something else under an .avif name. Only decoding is offered here.

Does converting lose quality?

Nothing is lost in the PNG step itself, because PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly. What you cannot recover is whatever the original AVIF encoder discarded when the file was made — that loss already happened before you got the file, and no conversion undoes it.
