the page box, not the pixels

Cropping changes what is shown, not what is stored

A PDF page carries two rectangles: the media box, which is the sheet of paper, and the crop box, which is the part a reader displays. Cropping here sets both to the area you keep, so the page really is smaller everywhere — on screen, in print, and in any tool you send the file to next. Nothing is rasterised in the process, so text stays text and vector art stays sharp.

Automatic trimming measures each page separately: it renders the page, finds the outermost mark that is not paper white, and puts the box just outside it. Scans are rarely fed straight, so a single box copied across a hundred pages eventually slices through a line of text on one of them. Measuring per page costs a moment before the download and saves that.

three steps

How to crop a PDF

01

Drop the PDF in

It opens in your browser with the same engine that draws our PDF previews. Nothing is uploaded, so a scanned book or a contract stays on your machine.

02

Trim automatically, or set the margins

Automatic finds the content on every page by itself. Otherwise give a percentage for each of the four sides; the preview dims exactly what will be cut away.

03

Download the cropped copy

Every page is written with its new box and the file is saved next to the original, which is never modified.

quick answers

Crop PDF FAQ

Does cropping delete the content outside the box?

No. Cropping sets the visible rectangle; the objects outside it are still in the file and anyone can bring them back by resetting the box. Never use cropping to hide names, addresses or anything else that must not travel with the document.

Does the text stay selectable?

Yes. Nothing is turned into an image — only the page boxes change. Text stays text, links keep working, and the file usually gets slightly smaller rather than larger.

How does the automatic trim decide where to cut?

It renders each page and looks for the outermost pixel that is darker than paper white, then leaves a small margin outside it. A page that is entirely blank is left at its full size rather than collapsed to nothing.

Why not use the same box for every page?

Because scans drift. Pages fed by hand sit a few millimetres apart from one another, so a box that fits page one will clip page forty. Each page is measured on its own for that reason.

What about landscape or rotated pages?

The box you set is the one you see. A page stored sideways with a rotation flag is measured in the orientation a reader shows it, and the rectangle is translated back before it is written.

My scan has a grey background — will it be trimmed?

Only if the background is close to white. A grey or coloured page counts as content everywhere, so nothing gets cut. Set the margins by hand in that case.

Can I crop only some pages?

Not here — the crop applies to the whole document. To crop part of it, pull those pages out with Extract PDF Pages, crop them, and reassemble with Merge PDF.

Does it work on a password-protected PDF?

No. Encrypted files cannot be opened here. Remove the password in the application that made the file or in your PDF reader, then run the unlocked copy through this tool.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The file is read, measured and rewritten inside your browser, and the result goes straight to your downloads. There is no server in this tool to send a document to.

Is this free?

Yes — free with no watermark.
