QR Code Scanner

Scan a QR code with your camera and see exactly what it contains — before you open anything.

QR scanner

☞ runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded

This browser cannot use the camera here. Open the page over a secure (https) connection in a current browser — or use the QR decoder to read a code from a photo or screenshot.

Read a QR code without installing an app

QR codes are on menus, parcels, posters, tickets and Wi-Fi stickers, and most phones can read them — but not every camera app does, laptops usually cannot, and some scanner apps are full of ads or send what you scan to their servers. This scanner runs in the browser: allow the camera, hold the code in the frame, and the contents appear a moment later.

The camera picture is analysed on your device and never uploaded or recorded. Once a code is found the camera switches off. Instead of jumping straight to a website, the scanner shows you the full text first and tells you what kind of code it is — a link, a Wi-Fi network with its password, an email address, a phone number or plain text — so you can check where a link really goes before you open it.

three steps

How to scan a QR code

01

Start the camera

Press start and allow camera access. On a phone the rear camera is used; on a laptop, the webcam. Switch cameras if your device has more than one.

02

Point it at the code

Hold the QR code inside the frame, close enough that it fills a good part of it. Codes on screens and printed codes both work, including light codes on dark backgrounds.

03

Check and use the result

The camera stops and the contents are shown. Copy the text, open a link after checking the address, or read a Wi-Fi network’s name and password.

quick answers

QR scanner FAQ

Is the camera image uploaded?

No. Frames from the camera are read directly in your browser to find the code, and nothing is sent anywhere or saved. The camera is switched off as soon as a code is found or you leave the page.

Why does it need camera permission?

Browsers only let a page use the camera after you allow it. If you blocked it by mistake, click the camera or lock icon in the address bar, allow the camera for this site and press start again.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Open the page in your phone’s browser and it uses the rear camera. It also works on laptops and desktops with a webcam.

Why does it not open links straight away?

QR codes are a common way to send people to fake websites, because you cannot see the address before scanning. The full link is shown first so you can check the domain; press open only if it is what you expect.

Can it connect me to a Wi-Fi network?

A web page cannot join a network for you, but the scanner shows the network name, password and security type from a Wi-Fi QR code so you can copy the password into your settings.

It will not pick up my code. What can I try?

Move closer so the code fills more of the frame, hold steady for a second, add light and tilt slightly to avoid glare on screens or glossy paper. Very damaged or blurry codes may not be readable.

Can it read barcodes on products?

No, this scanner reads QR codes only. Product barcodes such as EAN and UPC use a different format.

Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot?

Yes — use the QR decoder instead: upload the image and the code is read from the picture, with no camera needed.
