SVG → ICO
Build a multi-size .ico from a vector — each size rendered from the SVG itself, not shrunk down from one big bitmap.

sharp at 16 pixels
A favicon is mostly viewed at 16 pixels. Shrinking a 256px bitmap down to that size smears every edge together; rendering the vector at 16px lets the browser lay the shape onto the pixel grid directly.
That is what this page does — one render pass per size, all packed into a single .ico. Windows and browsers then pick whichever size they need.
three steps
Pick a .svg file — it stays on your device.
Tick the sizes to include; each one is rendered separately.
Save the .ico and drop it at the root of your site.
quick answers
16, 32 and 48 cover browser tabs, bookmarks and the Windows taskbar. Add 256 if the icon will show up in Explorer’s large icon view. More sizes only make the file bigger.
That is a design limit, not a conversion one — 16×16 is 256 pixels in total. Favicons that read well are usually a single letter or shape. Consider making a simplified SVG just for the icon.
Yes. Each size is written as a 32-bit PNG inside the .ico container, so the alpha channel survives. Turn the switch off if you would rather have a solid background.
It is scaled to fit inside the square and centred, with the remaining space left transparent. Icons read better when the artwork is square to begin with.
