A placeholder is a stand-in with the right dimensions: it holds the space so a layout can be judged before the real photography exists. Set width and height, pick two colours, edit the centre label, and download a PNG.
The file is drawn on a canvas in this tab, so there is no request to a placeholder service. That also means it works offline, behind a corporate proxy, and in a repository where you would rather not depend on a third-party URL staying alive for the next five years.

Anywhere from 16 px to 4096 px on each side. Matching the real asset exactly is the point — a placeholder at the wrong aspect ratio hides the layout problem you are trying to see.
Background and label colour are separate fields. Mid grey with darker text reads as a placeholder; a saturated colour reads as a design decision, which is rarely what you want in a wireframe.
The centre text defaults to the dimensions. Replace it with a content note — hero image, product shot, avatar — when someone else is going to read the mockup.
The file saves with the dimensions in its name, so a folder of placeholders stays sortable.
